Bad Roads

The owner of Eagle Environmental came by to inspect our basement this morning and give us a quote on a radon mitigation system. We thought his bid was reasonable. We’re getting another bid next week, hope to have this project done by the first week in February at the latest.

Ron reminded me that we haven’t tested at Edgewater, so I ordered a kit from KSU for Peter.

Roads were/are icy today; I’m glad we cut down the last big grasses at Edgewater yesterday. Even the deck was treacherous.

PT

I was hurting a lot today, but the pool exercises seem to have helped.

In between flurries, we cut down the last big grass in our yard. Mid-January, and the yard is finally ready for winter, ha ha.

I made a fish/chicken stew. Used a bottle of rejected IPA – mistake – it made the stew bitter. Sugar, salt, garlic powder and olive oil corrected it.

Ron had one hearing aid repaired. He goes back Thursday for the other one.

Rain

It’s about 40° and raining.

Noticed yesterday that some of the leaves on the male skimmia are wind-burned, so I covered it with the last coffee bean bag. The ground is still soft enough to put in stakes by hand.

We came up empty at the senior center this morning, so picked up some groceries at S&S. My legs aren’t great today, so just as well that I can’t do the yard work I’d planned.

Replaced the lightbulb in the oven. Watched last night’s episode of “Downton Abbey”.

Ed dropped by to give us the mortgage interest tax form and chat for a bit. We told him about the Radon test, which came in at 4.1 pCi/L. Ron lined up two companies to give us suggestions on remediation.

Ron cracked me up the other day in Dollar Tree. He kept jawing about his “PWabbit Peeps”. By coincidence, a group of mentally disabled adults was shopping there at the same time. I warned Ron that someone might insist on ushering him to the small bus….I felt terrible afterwards; hope they didn’t think I was laughing at them.

“See you Monday.”

Typical Sunday

We did laundry, changed sheets, did the transfer station run.

I cut down 3 grasses here and 3 more at Edgewater. Made mac and cheese for lunch, meatloaf/roasted veggies/baked potatoes for supper.

Legs hurt.

Warming Up

We had a short spell of single-digit weather with strong winds this past week.

Had my PT session in the pool yesterday; it was productive.

Fun going through the White Flower Farm catalog this morning.

Cindy dropped off the guitar and stayed for a short visit.  Mary very ill, not up for company.

Spoke with Mary and Cathy; neither are feeling especially great.

Got my new shears; they are fabulous.  Filled up most of the burlap container around the hydrangea with grass and leaves.  One of the salesmen at Eastman’s recommended an amazing cleaner that picked up the coffee I spilled the other day in Ron’s room.  Picked up ale and cooking sherry at Kappy’s.

Watching Patriots/Ravens online.  Ron is playing his new electric guitar!

Passed Electric Inspection

A gent from Knox Electric and the Town inspector were here and signed off.

We got everyone’s signature on the timeshare deed.  Connie notarized it last evening.

Ron won mega points by packing up the Christmas lights, much more professionally than I.

PT yesterday.  Couldn’t use the bike, hurt too much.

Afterwards, I picked up more burlap from Cape Cod Coffee Roasters and Ron and I finished the shrub wrapping yesterday afternoon.

So tired that I fell asleep at 7:15.  Woke up around 9:30, went back to sleep, didn’t get up until 6:30 this morning.

Ron is making supper: spaghetti and clam sauce.

We brought the remaining branches to Emma’s today for the sheep.  They love the bark.

I piled the rest of the straw around the wrapped bushes.

Made two pies with “used” plums: so much better than eating them raw!

Cold Monday

It was very cold today, wind chill was around 24, which doesn’t sound that bad, but I swear it made me hypothermic and as a result, stupid and clumsy.  Predicted to be in the teens tonight.

Ron got the window well covers on and picked up better stakes for the bushes.

We managed to get five plants partially or fully wrapped.  I need to pick up more burlap.

We are all four of us – Ron, me, Peter Bonnie – set to sign the deed tomorrow at Connie’s.

I’ve been angry with Ron the last couple of days, partly because of my leg, but also because of his endless reminiscing about Berkeley, Cal, Oakland, San Francisco, etc.  I hate dwelling on my past and resent his having a much better one than Peter and I did.

Easy Sunday

It snowed last night but warmed up by morning, so everything was wet and a bit rainy when I got up to fetch the Times and make coffee.

I was a cranky mess, fretting about money and my leg hurt.  Feeling much better after giving my leg a rest and watching “American Horror Story”, Season 3 this afternoon/evening.

Ron is doing chairs and getting into other mischief in WH.

I just put a salmon filet and a not-quite-too-far-gone acorn squash in the oven.

Got laundry, sheets and transfer station run done.  Ron re-hung the first terrarium and I finally finished the second.  Ron is about finished with the repair of the sideboard.

Got the holiday lights off the bushes and downstairs, ready to be put away whenever I find the box.

I planted stakes for burlap around two of the new bushes.  Ron picked up a hatchet so we can sharpen stakes for two more.  Supposed to get very cold tomorrow night, so setting these up is a priority for tomorrow.  It took me forever to get my mind set on how to do this, but I think four stakes in a box shape should work fine.  Fortunately, we don’t have to buy extra materials for this.

Conni dropped off the draft Sea Mist sale docs.

Beverly

Ron drove John and I to a meeting for the NEPS web gang at Cycles!128.

It was a good meeting.  We stopped in to the Job Lot in Bourne on the way back, and we were relieved to be home by the time the snow started this afternoon.  I’ve been listening to it slide off the solar panels!

Ron and I went to a whiskey tasting at Andy’s.
