Too D*d Hot

We’ve had days of misery, heat and humidity, and it feels like weeks since it’s been decent weather for any kind of outdoor activity.

Fortunately, the grass doesn’t grow very fast in these conditions, so mowing for the last two weeks has been a punt.
As for the gardens, this is the time for near-constant vigilance. In heat like this, you almost need to watch container plants by the hour – this morning, a little box of lobelia and mint looked fine. By 1:00, it was a shriveled, darkened mess.
Yesterday was the opening of the County Fair, in 90 degree heat, but the vendors and volunteers were cheerful in spite of it.
Last night, we had a spectacular display of cloud-to-cloud lightning with almost no thunder and a brief rain shower, and this morning, the air is better, even pleasant, for the moment.
