Slushies for Kids

It being hot outside (see prior blog entry), my youngest grandchild, James, recruited me to bring the crushed ice machine to his preschool today.
It makes tolerably good Slushies, not quite as fine as you get from the big commercial machines, but good enough, especially since I got it for free at a local yard sale.

It was a good thing I showed up instead of punting to do something else, because James was manic with delight when he saw me, running around like a crazy person (“My Grandma’s here to make slushies!!”)
The children were incredibly well-behaved, waiting their turns politely, and a couple of them thanked me for a “fun time”.
Such joy over some paper cones, plastic spoons, ice, and a few cents of syrup.
Plus, Bob won an award today at school, for academic excellence in Language Arts. Good thing the ceremony was today, he was expelled yesterday for calling the new principal-elect a “bastard”.
James’ preschool is in an idyllic spot, in a building surrounded by dozens of trees, next to a field where the kids can run around.
He’ll be graduating in about 17 days, the last of Peter and Bonnie’s kids to enter Kindergarten in the fall.
Soon thereafter, the days will start getting shorter, which besides the heat, is the downside of summer.
But right now, two happy little boys, a certificate of achievement, slushies and the fast-approaching end of the school year make for halcyon days, the kind you want to remember.
