Public Kvetching Is Not a Public Service

I’ve read the newspaper on a daily basis for over 40 years.
I think I’m going to stop.

There seems to be less and less substantive news, and more and more junk – celebrity carryings-on, sensationalistic tales of kidnap and murder, and, worst of all, op/eds of little or no substance.
I’ve had a problem with op/ed writers for a long time. They strike me as upper-income voyeurs who make a living off the misery of others. They ALWAYS whine “ain’t it awful”, rarely (except for Bob Herbert in the NYT) present facts to back up their points of view, and NEVER, ever propose an action plan to solve their social ill du jour.
I’m sick of reading them, all of them, left and right, and I’m going to use that time more productively from now on.
At least, until Maureen Dowd returns from her sabbatical (she’s writing a book).
