Gardener’s Diary

It’s been a long while: my right knee kicked up again last month, but two evenings ago I dragged out the old push mower and did the lawn, and yesterday felt well enough to do some real gardening and to visit a local plant sale.

Until the back yard gets cleared, which at this point looks like it won’t happen until the fall at the earliest, I’m pretty much “done” with perennials.
I planted a couple of Stargazers that my nephew Michael had placed at Bis’s grave, along with six white and purple phlox, in the little garden that used to be shaded by an oak tree in the front. It’s really nice to have some color there.
Picked up some desperately-needed new clippers on sale at TrueValue and used them to cut down and cleaned out the hydrangeas in the front. They won’t flower this year, but they were getting out of control.
For the first time, I got to the Falmouth Beautification Council’s yearly plant sale at Town Hall Square. Their stock was magnificent, and I picked up some annuals at bargain prices: only $2.50 for six-packs and $1.75 for some gorgeous apricot Diascia.
Peter and I did the transfer station run a day in early, just in case they decided to close for Mother’s Day like they did last year.
Today the weather is just about picture-perfect for a little more outdoor work: sunny and mid-60’s.
