Two NYU researchers have succeeded in attaching an economic cost to being a “big girl”: every 1% increase in a woman’s BMI means a 0.6% decrease in future family income.
Class in America
The New York Times published part 4 of its series on class in America today. Great idea, but I think they missed an opportunity.
$16 Investment, $64 Result
Yesterday, after trying without success to fit a programmatic square peg into a round hole, I visited one of our local nurseries for stock to complete a planter on the deck.
The season is very late this year, and even though Memorial Day weekend is not too far off, the weather has been lousy, not at all typical of Spring. Between these two, it’s been hard to find healthy-looking plants: the dampness and cold have resulted in spindly stocks and yellowed or even decayed leaves.
Sube and Slushies
I bought my Subaru Impreza in 1994. It’s a ’93, the last one on the lot, and I got it for a good price, I think around $12,000 after dealer discounts. Peter helped me pick it out after we made the rounds at several different dealerships.
It now has over 221,000 miles. Although it’s needed maintenance-type repairs through the years, every mechanic who has worked on it says it’s worth hanging on to.
Pecs and the City
For the past several weeks, I’ve been working off and on in Boston, something I’ve sworn in the past not to do because of the long haul, but in spite of the inconvenience, it’s been a good break from the usual.
This has involved, among other things, carrying one and sometimes two computers, and doing a lot more walking than is possible here, where one or two inconsiderate neighbors allow their Rottie and other beasts with fangs and claws to roam freely, thus terrorizing the rest of us.
BJ’s Is All Right
I joined BJ’s the first week they opened their store on Cape, and already, I’ve become a loyal customer, for life.

First attempt at uploading photos to Flickr, which is an awesome service of Yahoo.
The ones of Emme’s First Holy Communion were taken today with the new Kodak digital camera.
What a Week
I got to mind the 3 grandkids from Friday afternoon to about 9:30 last night, capping a week that included:
– 2 user group meetings, one of them mine;
– the latest and hopefully last in a series of car repairs;
– a visit (with the kids) to my most understanding Dennisport customer for a quick IT consult;
– a presentation on Technology for Non-Profits at two sessions of the Cape Corps Volunteer Expo;
– an agonizing 5 hour round trip to Hyannis via the b-Bus and
– an escape from the dour, patriarchal cynicism of Cape Cod via a 2-day client onsite in Boston.
Blood, Boston, B-bus, Baskin-Robbins
I didn’t realize how many tulips have come up this spring until I decided this evening to put down dry blood around each and every one of ’em.
This is to prevent squirrels from eating the flowers, which are now fat buds and will be out soon.
We don’t have as many squirrels as we used to, since one of the neighbors decided to capture them in his Have-A-Heart trap and release them to a spot across the highway. He’s gotten over 150.
Still, you can’t be too careful.
What the Heck……?
So, Pope Benedict XVI has not yet repudiated the assinine, paranoid comments he made back in 2002 that the reports of child sexual abuse by priests in the American press were really just anti-Catholic propaganda:
“In the United States, there is constant news on this topic…one comes to the conclusion that it is intentional, manipulated – that there is a desire to discredit the church.”
