A Cautionary Tale

In the ’70’s, author/housewife Terry Martin Hekker made quite a stir on the talk show circuit with her anti-feminist, pro-homemaker/stay-at-home-Mom opinions.

On January 1 of this year, in a column in the New York Times, she reported that on her 40th anniversary, her husband served her with divorce papers.
Ms. Hekker is now sorry she didn’t take advantage of her opportunities to continue her education instead of pouring her energies into volunteer work.
Her words: For a divorced mother, the harsh reality is that the work for which you do get paid is the only work that will keep you afloat.
Would she consider writing a sequel? Apparently not:
My anachronistic book was written while I was in a successful marriage that I expected would go on forever. Sadly, it now has little relevance for modern women, except perhaps as a cautionary tale: never its intended purpose. So I couldn’t imagine writing a sequel. But my friend Elaine did come up with a perfect title: “Disregard First Book.”
