So, the Senate and the Bush Administration, trying to distance themselves from the inevitable consequences of an ill-thought-out war in an oil-rich country, have declared that the excesses at Abu Ghraib are not reflective of the character of the American people.
Seems to me that the descriptions – the most recent of which have been censored for fear of offending voters’ delicate sensibilities – read pretty much like a report of conditions in a lot of American prisons, not to mention an average day’s police blotter in any major American city.
I’m talking about sleep deprivation, rape, sexual molestation of minor children, shackling, beatings, humiliation, abuse of authority.
