Then, where did the recent annoying practice of sprinkling these noises into written essays and articles come from?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m especially fascinated by the fact that <em>male<\/em> writers seem to be using this device, even though it reads more like baby talk than sophisticated repartee.<br \/>\nConsider this excerpt from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time-blog.com\/tuned_in\/2008\/06\/the_morning_after_tony_tony_to.html\" target=\"_blank\">piece<\/a> about the Tony awards by Time&#8217;s James Poniewozik:<br \/>\n<em>Don&#8217;t get me wrong: I enjoy a good August: Osage County joke as good as the next guy who&#8217;s, <strong>um<\/strong> never seen the play<\/em><br \/>\nGiven, Mr. Poniewozik is not writing about manly stuff like war or sports, but I still find this unseemly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s considered bad form to pepper a speech with um&#8217;s and ah&#8217;s.
