{"id":84,"date":"2004-03-02T07:52:50","date_gmt":"2004-03-02T12:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/wp\/?p=84"},"modified":"2004-03-02T07:52:50","modified_gmt":"2004-03-02T12:52:50","slug":"hear-hear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=84","title":{"rendered":"Hear, Hear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the fifth year, China has issued a call to the United States to mend our own lousy human rights record before critcizing theirs.<br \/>\nAccording to <a href=http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,112972,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">an AP story in Fox News<\/a>, &#8220;The Chinese report said the United States &#8216;should take its own human rights problems seriously &#8230; &#8220;and stop its unpopular interference with other countries&#8217; internal affairs under the pretext of promoting human rights.'&#8221;<br \/>\nThe report from Beijing specifically criticized the US for its treatment of working people, women, children and the elderly.  It described the US as a &#8220;crime-ridden&#8221; society which continues to discriminate against minorities, and it commented on the number of civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of US military action.<br \/>\nComing within a week of Greenspan&#8217;s assault on Social Security and the Frontline special on the war in Iraq, it&#8217;s tough to argue with Beijing&#8217;s logic.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not saying our Federal government is wrong to have gotten rid of Saddam or to protest the persecution of the Falun Gong and other prisoners of conscience in China.<br \/>\nThe fact is, Washington generally doesn&#8217;t set a great example for the rest of the world.
