The matters I deal with consume enough energy that I can&#8217;t imagine having the fate of the world as a daily concern.<\/p><p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe two big summer events in this neighborhood, the Barnstable County Fair and the annual Pops concert, are done; around 4:30 this morning, I could hear them tearing down the Fair.<br \/>\nI stayed at the Pops only a few minutes, but watched the 15 minute fireworks display from the High School, which was the perfect venue &#8211; unobstructed view, easy to get in, easy to get out, and only a few people there.<br \/>\nMy eldest grandchild and I benefitted yesterday from the generosity of neighbors, one of whom let us have exclusive use of their in-ground pool, and another of whom invited us spur-of-the-moment to a nice birthday celebration.<br \/>\nI finished a contract and started another, getting a full-time job offer in the middle, which would be a great thing except that it involves a lot of airline travel, no longer the bearable experience it used to be even a year or two ago.<br \/>\nMy former client sent a furious email to his colleagues about his dog&#8217;s being attacked at work by another dog.  Seems to me that allowing animals in the workplace is just another one of those precious but ill-conceived policies that some business owners adopt for PR reasons.<br \/>\nThe dog who was hurt is a tiny little fellow, very good-natured.  His owner is normally a circumspect, politically astute individual, which makes his outburst astonishing and no doubt completely justified.  Obviously, he&#8217;s been pushed to the edge in more ways than one.<br \/>\nWe got a short break from the worst of the heat and humidity, which we are told to our regret will return shortly and last until at least Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m glad I&#8217;m not Condoleeza Rice.
