{"id":65,"date":"2004-02-07T15:50:04","date_gmt":"2004-02-07T20:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/wp\/?p=65"},"modified":"2004-02-07T15:50:04","modified_gmt":"2004-02-07T20:50:04","slug":"weathering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=65","title":{"rendered":"Weathering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This witty poem was awarded third place in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capecodonline.com\/primetime\/poetry2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Cod Times Primetime 2003 Poetry & Prose Contest<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe author, Kate Connolly lives in Centerville, MA.<\/p><p><!--more--><br \/>\nWeathering<br \/>\nBy Kate Connolly<br \/>\nSummer is telling on skinny old ladies<br \/>\nWho lack insulation when it&#8217;s hotter than Hades<br \/>\nAnd must endure heat waves as well as they can<br \/>\nWith a glass of iced tea and their grandmother&#8217;s fan,<br \/>\nWearing cover-up clothing designed to conceal<br \/>\nPale stick-figure limbs unappealingly real,<br \/>\nPlus paper-thin limbs best kept out of reach<br \/>\nOf harsh UV rays at an oceanside beach.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re obliged to take shelter from estival scorch<br \/>\nBy sitting in wicker on an old-fashioned porch<br \/>\nWhere they marvel at women of fine heft and girth<br \/>\nWho can saunter through summer like salt of the earth<br \/>\nWearing bright sleeveless jerseys and the latest in shorts<br \/>\n(Which indicates pep and a penchant for sports),<br \/>\nTheir substantial figures just sturdy enough<br \/>\nFor simmering smoothly while strutting their stuff.<br \/>\nSo the spindly old ladies with casual glee<br \/>\nSwallow regular doses of Vitamin D<br \/>\nWhile rehashing the days when, so nubile, so slim,<br \/>\nThey could sprint to the sea for a saltwater swim<br \/>\nWhere they&#8217;d gracefully romp clad in slightest attire<br \/>\nGiving warm-weather lovers fair parts to admire.<br \/>\nBut the seasons do change, summer&#8217;s heat does diminish<br \/>\nAnd though wispy old ladies may abide to the finish,<br \/>\nThey rejoice when the chill wind of autumn arrives<br \/>\nBringing bright bulky sweaters back into their lives,<br \/>\nAlso ponchos and parkas and Polartec fleece<br \/>\nAnd soft puffy jackets filled with down plucked from geese,<br \/>\nThus bolstered and padded they tend to forget<br \/>\nAbout down-the-road summers they haven&#8217;t yet met.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This witty poem was awarded third place in the Cape Cod Times Primetime 2003 Poetry &#038; Prose Contest.
