{"id":5419,"date":"2013-04-18T18:04:39","date_gmt":"2013-04-18T23:04:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=5419"},"modified":"2013-04-18T18:07:51","modified_gmt":"2013-04-18T23:07:51","slug":"being-nice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=5419","title":{"rendered":"Being Nice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been warning people lately to not expect much from me because I&#8217;m not a &#8220;nice&#8221; person.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s taken a while for me to figure out exactly how to explain this.  <\/p><p>&#8220;Nice&#8221; as in using insincere &#8220;tut-tut&#8221; noises like &#8220;Bless your heart&#8221; or &#8220;Well, that&#8217;s <em>different<\/em>&#8221; like a rapier.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nice&#8221; as in making allowances for those who don&#8217;t merit the courtesy because they have money or position.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nice&#8221; as in &#8220;butter wouldn&#8217;t melt in her mouth&#8221;.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nice&#8221; as in being loathe to tell the truth or for that matter to listen to it.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nice&#8221; as in doing things just to ingratiate yourself with others and\/or just to appear &#8211; nice.<\/p><p>&#8220;Nice&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean loyal, trustworthy or even observant of basic social graces.  It doesn&#8217;t mean doing volunteer work or helping out a friend.  <\/p><p>There is something sinister and manipulative about &#8220;nice&#8221;, as opposed to &#8220;decent&#8221;, &#8220;hard-working&#8221;, &#8220;generous&#8221;.<\/p><p>I am not nice and am quite self-righteous about that.
