{"id":404,"date":"2005-08-12T07:51:08","date_gmt":"2005-08-12T12:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/wp\/?p=404"},"modified":"2005-08-12T07:51:08","modified_gmt":"2005-08-12T12:51:08","slug":"so-how-will-you-spend-your-money-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=404","title":{"rendered":"So, How Will You Spend Your Money This Weekend?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The beneficent Mass. legislature has declared this weekend the second-in-history sales-tax-free holiday, for purchases under $2,500.<\/p><p><!--more--><br \/>\nUnderstandably, retailers have blitzed the media with frenzied bally-hoo.<br \/>\nPer the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massdor.com\/rul_reg\/tir\/tir_05_9.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mass. DOR website<\/a>, the following do not qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption and remain subject to tax:  all motor vehicles, motorboats, meals, telecommunications services, gas, steam (<em>steam?<\/em>), electricity, and tobacco products.<br \/>\nRental fees are also excluded from tax, provided the rental is paid for this weekend.  Rain checks received this weekend are still subject to tax, but redeeming a previously-issued rain check is not.<br \/>\nFinally, the sales tax exemption only applies to items for personal, not business, use.
