{"id":1345,"date":"2010-03-03T10:08:35","date_gmt":"2010-03-03T15:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/wp\/?p=1345"},"modified":"2010-03-03T10:08:35","modified_gmt":"2010-03-03T15:08:35","slug":"the-ugly-and-the-good-invites-to-womens-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=1345","title":{"rendered":"The Ugly and the Good: Invites to Women&#8217;s Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve avoided local female professional organization get-togethers because the announcements give me the willies.<br \/>\nSome are a turn-off because they are so hideously bridal-shower chatty, so &#8220;just us girls&#8221;, so clubby, exclusive and manipulative.<br \/>\nOthers are preachy and directive, clubbing you over the head with their over-competitive &#8220;join us or else you and your business (and your children and your pets) will die&#8221; dog-eat-dog hard sell.<br \/>\nIn other words, the announcements are everything that&#8217;s hideous about the American notion of a woman deserving of success, whether it be a good marriage or a fulfilling career.<br \/>\nCompare and contrast with a UK organization called &#8220;Women in Technology&#8221;.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.womenintechnology.co.uk\/graphics\/women-in-techology.gif\" align=\"right\" \/>  I&#8217;m sorry to be an ocean away, because the invites are respectful, guileless, non-manipulative, intelligent and, well, <strong>helpful<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenintechnology.co.uk\/selling-the-feminine-way\" target=\"_blank\">example<\/a> of an event I&#8217;d love to attend.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s a testosterone-fueled <a href=\"http:\/\/shesgeeky.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a> that might appeal to Amazonian triathlete multi-national CEOs but not I suspect to the average woman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve avoided local female professional organization get-togethers because the announcements give me the willies.
