{"id":1144,"date":"2008-11-30T06:51:37","date_gmt":"2008-11-30T11:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/wp\/?p=1144"},"modified":"2008-11-30T06:51:37","modified_gmt":"2008-11-30T11:51:37","slug":"once-upon-a-mattress-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecapeblog.com\/?p=1144","title":{"rendered":"Once Upon a Mattress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I bought the guest room trundle bed some years ago, the bottom came with a 5 inch thick foam rubber mattress, the kind you&#8217;d put on a cot.<br \/>\nI never liked this mattress much and neither did the kids: when they were little, there would be fights about who got the &#8220;big&#8221; bed.<\/p><p><!--more--><br \/>\nSo, when it became necessary this week to get rid of the old mattress, I wasn&#8217;t entirely heartbroken; but as they say, the devil is in the details.<br \/>\nI found to my chagrin that the disposal fee at the town&#8217;s transfer station is $17 &#8211; even though it&#8217;s not a real mattress, just a piece of foam.<br \/>\nFurther, it&#8217;s expensive to replace.  Even the 2 1\/2 inch foam toppers at Ocean State Job Lot are $99.<br \/>\nI thought there would be time to shop around, but the boys decided they wanted to stay over last night, so I really needed something for the trundle bed right away.<br \/>\nSo, I dragged them to Falmouth last night, and after a couple of false starts, we dropped in to the new Sleepy&#8217;s which, incredibly, was open until 9.<br \/>\nNormally, you&#8217;d have to order a mattress and wait 2-3 weeks, but they had a couple of floor models at less than half price which we could take with us.<br \/>\nI hadn&#8217;t planned on shopping for a real mattress, so had to go back to the house to measure the clearance: a little over 8 inches.<br \/>\nLong story already too long, James has been sleeping happily on the new mattress for close to 10 hours.<br \/>\nNow, if I could just figure out a way to dispose of the old one&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I bought the guest room trundle bed some years ago, the bottom came with a 5 inch thick foam rubber mattress, the kind you&#8217;d put on a cot.
