Gardener’s Diary

Plant sales start in earnest today, there are probably half a dozen at various locations, including across the street.
I did a survey of the gardens this morning and found only a couple of empty spots, so it’ll be worth it to check out what the Master Gardners have to offer.

I’ve been pleased to see that the azalea I transplanted at P&B’s earlier this spring is doing very well, and the little rhodie put in a couple of years ago has finally bloomed. They do have lots of color in the front, something Peter likes.
Did some light pruning over there during the week, mainly on the potentilla, which I should probably put in a sunnier spot and replace with something shade-tolerant, and a mountain laurel that was out of control.
I’ve been working my way from the front yard to the back, which mostly needs to lose a couple of trees and gain some loam. The spot where I’ve envisioned a garden needs to be cleared of overgrown forsythia – big jobs requiring help and a chainsaw.
Did a lousy job of mowing my own lawn one evening this week, it’s hard to see in the late afternoon/early evening. Oh, well, at least it’s no longer the eyesore it was, the tall stands of crabgrass under control for now.
