Mother and Father of the Year – Part II

Okay, I give up – what’s the excuse now for two able-bodied adults in their twenties, living off the charity of several Atlanta-area churches, for the brutal, ritual murder of a little 6 year old girl?
“She had been strangled and stabbed, and her back was broken, police said.
“She had numerous broken bones and compound fractures,” said Atlanta police public information officer John Quigley.”

No doubt, there will be the usual spectacle:
– Interviews with eager defense attorneys, building their reputations at the public trough, babbling tales of woe about the hard lives of Christopher Carey, 29, and his wife, Valerie Carey, 27.
– Photographs of the accused, posed to look either bewildered (insanity defense) or embarassed and contrite.
– Quotes from neighbors and friends to the effect that they were or seemed to be such a nice family and that they “can’t believe” that the Careys actually did this.
– Sickening quasi-“religious” rationales that they tortured and murdered a 6 year old girl because they thought they were sending her to a better place, were chosen by G*d to fulfill a prophesy, were simply exercising their parental “rights” to discipline a child who was disruptive to the family, etc.
And if, by some miracle, Christopher Carey is sent by a fellow inmate to the eternal damnation he so well deserves, how many voices will be raised in protest about the terrible conditions in jails that allow such things to happen?
Maybe instead of the media’s giving more publicity to defense attorneys, social workers, TV personalities and others who seem to make a living excusing behavior like this, there should be video portrayals of what that child’s pathetic life was like before and during her murder.
But, oh, excuse me, that would offend sensibilities and taint the jury pool.
