Rain

It’s raining, and the gardeners and landscapers are happy, if not the parents of schoolkids on their first day of summer vacation.
It’s been weeks since we’ve had rain, and this is a good, soaking one that comes, luckily, a day after the local Pro-Am.

Even with the long spate of drought, older, established plants have been hanging on, presumably because the rain that dumped in the spring raised the water table high enough.
This end of June shower is a blessing, though, to those who planted late. End of season sales are a powerful draw, pitting short-term frugality against reason.
For example, I put in some relatively inexpensive annuals last weekend, zinnias and marigolds, to fill in some spots in front of the fence.
With this rain, I’m hoping that the larkspur will start blooming over the next couple of days.
Hosta, summer daisies and day lilies should start thereafter.
