A Handful of Random Post-Election Thoughts

If Bill Clinton had “delivered” Arkansas for the Democrats, and John Edwards had done the same with North Carolina, John Kerry would be the President-elect.
And why didn’t MoveOn give a hand to Doris “Granny D” Haddock in her run for Senator from NH? As previously noted, MoveOn’s rate of success was pathetic: only 5 of their 27 candidates for the House or the Senate were elected.

Some of us expected this: more and more stories coming out about electronic voting “malfunctions”, including machines in Broward County, Florida, which started SUBTRACTING votes when precinct totals exceeded 32,000. The same glitchy software was used, by the way, in Martin and Miami-Dade.
So, where are the Democrat’s 10,000 watchdog lawyers now? In the restroom, combing their hair?
Maybe next time the Dems should have an army of software engineers and CISSP’s instead.
Meanwhile, progressive religious leaders are dismayed by the fact that the Bush/Christian coalition camp has “cooked the Book” by reducing the Old and New Testaments to a handful of anti-sodomy verses.
It seems that all that inconvenient other stuff about “do unto others” and charity to those less fortunate has been pitched out the window.
You’ll notice I didn’t reference any Biblical passages to do with abortion, the other cornerstone “morality” issue this year. That’s because there AREN’T any – the Bible is silent on the specific subject of abortion.
So, how did a woman’s right to choose become part of the Fundamentalist political agenda? Kelpie Wilson, TruthOut’s environmental editor, suggests that forcing women to produce more children is part of the agenda of fascist states like the Roman Empire and the Third Reich, who used unwanted children from large families as slaves and soldiers, respectively.
Thus, expect to see Roe v Wade overturned in the next four years, with adoption being proposed by both the Left and the Right as a “solution” to unwanted pregnancies.
Expect also to see public discourse focus on the trauma to women forced to endure pregnancy and childbirth, or the needs of childless couples. The third and most important member of the triad, the child, will be left out – as usual.
The sadness in the hearts of unwanted children, from every time and every continent, could extinguish the sun. If one believes that souls exist, then it is a terrible injustice to force any human soul to inhabit the body of a child unwanted by his or her own folks.
The multi-billion dollar adoption industry, which is championed by social conservatives, demeans and compromises the values all of us. It is especially destructive to the poor, who are expected to produce children for the selfish pleasure of the spoiled rich. In other words, Bush’s “base”.
