Mud & Manure

As a gardener, I resent the bad rap that mud and manure got this week as a result of their misuse at the Republican National Convention.

Mud and manure are a gardener’s mainstays, essential to the job of raising healthy, productive plants.
These staples of the gardener’s craft are too precious to be throttled about by “faded glory” guys like Zell Miller and even Bob Dole.
What WILL it take for prominent politicians to keep their hands out of the mud and the bulls* while preaching from their bully pulpits?
Speaking the truth about the failure of the war against terrorism; tolerance for people of a non-traditional sexual orientation; fiscal responsibility; a pledge to end the pandering to the pharmaceutical industry and other special interests; and a real commitment to protect the environment would be a far superior toolset for use in election campaigns.
And the same goes for you, Senator Elizabeth Dole, with your ridiculous, offensive assertion that marriage “between a man and a woman” is “the cornerstone of civilization”.
What does that make the 48% of American households (82 million people and growing) who are single – chopped liver?
Or will you take a pledge to stop spending our tax money, since it obviously comes from reprobates who shake society’s very foundation with their shameful unmarried status?
Mud and manure: they are a vital part of the repetoire of the farmer and the gardener. I’m tired of the pols coopting them for their phoney, self-serving culture wars.
