Gardener’s Diary

It’s hot and humid, and we are at the “almosts” as far as construction: almost done with the siding, trim, interior finish work, deck railings, front stairs.
Mark and Ryan worked their tails off yesterday in spite of the heat. They got in the three new windows as well as all but the topmost course of the back siding: just as well, we’ve had off and on torrential rain since 4:30 this morning.
I’m glad Robert and I cleaned up the big cardboard siding boxes last evening. He did most of the work.

I’ve been making trips to the transfer station more often than usual. Just found out that they now accept brush.
Set up the soaker hoses yesterday and did some weeding in the front garden, which I’ve neglected badly this year. Ryan may be coming back tomorrow to do more weeding, edging and mulch, and to clean the outside of the front gutter. This is his first landscaping job, and I’m told he’s very proud of that.
Ed commented that the back of the house looks better than the front, and he’s right, because of the deck and the upgraded spindles.
Mr. Fluffles has been calm throughout all the banging and disruption, people coming in and out to use the bathroom, etc.
The floors in this place are a wreck, though, and the window replacement has been messy. I restocked on vacuum cleaner bags and am planning to do some cleanup today, even though we are still in process.
This all seems like a dream: no more falling-apart porch or ugly back yard, new storage in the attic, attractive Quaker gray siding, new windows complete in 3 rooms.
