Once Upon a Mattress

When I bought the guest room trundle bed some years ago, the bottom came with a 5 inch thick foam rubber mattress, the kind you’d put on a cot.
I never liked this mattress much and neither did the kids: when they were little, there would be fights about who got the “big” bed.

So, when it became necessary this week to get rid of the old mattress, I wasn’t entirely heartbroken; but as they say, the devil is in the details.
I found to my chagrin that the disposal fee at the town’s transfer station is $17 – even though it’s not a real mattress, just a piece of foam.
Further, it’s expensive to replace. Even the 2 1/2 inch foam toppers at Ocean State Job Lot are $99.
I thought there would be time to shop around, but the boys decided they wanted to stay over last night, so I really needed something for the trundle bed right away.
So, I dragged them to Falmouth last night, and after a couple of false starts, we dropped in to the new Sleepy’s which, incredibly, was open until 9.
Normally, you’d have to order a mattress and wait 2-3 weeks, but they had a couple of floor models at less than half price which we could take with us.
I hadn’t planned on shopping for a real mattress, so had to go back to the house to measure the clearance: a little over 8 inches.
Long story already too long, James has been sleeping happily on the new mattress for close to 10 hours.
Now, if I could just figure out a way to dispose of the old one….
